Jason Chapter

For lack of a better word, Jason is a jerk. Though the chapter does not reveal a lot of plot content, it does demonstrate Jason's character. He seems to go out of his way to belittle and abuse others. For example, when Jason has extra tickets to the show that Luster wants to attend, Jason doesn't just refuse to give Luster the tickets; he burns the tickets and makes Luster watch. Jason is also a bigot, and he is highly intolerable of anyone else who isn't him. In his chapter, he talks down on women, black people, and mentally handicapped people. The characteristic that I find most interesting about Jason is his insecurity. He is always concerned with the way people view him. He hates Benjy because Benjy's mental illness embarrasses him. Jason's biggest concern with Quentin is that her behavior will make him look bad. Even though he believes that he is above everyone else, he seems to care a whole lot about what others think of him.

  1. Your voice is so clear in this analysis. Jason is a jerk! I like how you supported your accusations of his character. It's one thing to simply state that Jason likes to belittle people, and another to explain how he burned poor Luster's tickets. I like how you tied in his awful belittling behavior with this idea of insecurity. Often times the "bully", is very insecure. Jason is so concerned with how people see him because he does not see himself in a good light. Because Benjy has a mental illness, I think Jason see's it as a disgrace to him which is actually rather selfish. Overall, I really like how at the end you made the comparison between his belief that he is of high stature, yet he is so concerned with how he is viewed by others.

  3. Hey Ben! Good observation on the fact that Jason is insecure. Insecurity is a huge red flag for a bully, and this is exactly what Jason is. He is constantly concerned about his self image compared to other people. In order to make himself feel as if he has authority, he must beleaguer others first. He looks down on others so he can feel higher in the social hierarchy. Jason may resort to bullying because he realizes that he cannot attain a higher position in society due to his lack of education. Maybe, because he cannot take a step up in his social status, he bullys others who have that ability.

  4. good, but try to consider what Faulkner is saying about this, not just your reaction, why does he want you to feel this way toward Jason
